John Crossman’s Celtic Pedal Adventure to raise funds for Trust Youth April 2011
"I passionately believe that young people are capable of great things but they get so little opportunity to demonstrate this. That’s why I set up Trust Youth, to help them show what they can do.
This ride has many purposes but first and foremost it is to raise money for Trust Youth. I shall be covering over 3500 kilometers riding from Santiago in Northern Spain to Iona in Scotland, riding through all the countries where the celts settled in Western Europe.
The route starts along the old pilgrim way through Spain to the French border, the up the west coast to Brittany and Roscoff, then by sea to Plymouth. I’ll then cycle to Lands End and along the Bristol Channel coast to Ilfracombe. They tell me there will be a ferry from there to Swansea in 2011, otherwise its a 400km loop via the M48 road bridge.
After that it’s off to Ireland via the Pembroke – Rosslare ferry and round Ireland to Ballycastle. I have a friend who can arrange a boat from there to the Mull of Kintyre from where it’s a couple of hundred km to Iona.
I’ll be mainly camping with the odd B and B if the weather is really poor. I’ll buy and cook my own food and generally live as simply as possible – there’s not much choice when you have to carry everything on the bike!
I aim to raise £5000 for Trust Youth. That will allow us to run in another ten schools for a year and seriously affect the lives of at least 100 young people. Please help me by donating via my fundraising website at www.celticpedaladventure.com”
